Pre-School Orientation

He & new friend "Charlie" standing nervous
Found his pack of supplies & SMARTIES!
Tuesday after Labor Day was a big day for Jacob...meet the teacher day!  Jacob and I had to be at Most Blessed Sacrament PreSchool for 9:30 to meet his new teacher, Mrs. Carol Copeland. Jacob kept insisting that he go back to his "orange school," where the bricks are the color of rust.  He wanted to see his friends and be with his teachers.  Jacob has a hard time already with the concept of time, that I couldn't even begin to explain "time to go to Big Boy school."  Hell, I can't even understand that myself.

So, on we went into the doors, greeted and smiled everyone we encountered and found his Yellow Classroom.  Tightly he held on to my hand, still not confident in my “You are going to love your new teacher” line. We were the first in the classroom so we had Mrs. Carol’s undivided attention and her Teacher Aide, Mrs. Monica’s.  Instantly, Mrs. Monica pried Jacob’s hand from mine and asked him to find his name throughout the classroom.  She walked him around the room, turning his head around to make sure I wasn’t far behind his feet.  He found his cubby where he’s supposed to put his backpack every morning & his chair where he’s supposed to sit every day.  Then, he saw the “School of Fish” on the wall and questioned how he was able to get to have his name on the “SwordFish.”

Mrs. Carol gathered the parents together so she could speak to us about the ever-important topics of carpool, lunch, tuition, potty breaks, etc.  Jacob kept his eyes glued on me the entire time.  At first I was nervous since he wasn’t interacting with anyone…stood aside from the group, but then I used this as an example later on.
“Did you see how Momma sat still and listened to Mrs. Carol when she was talking? “
“Yup, and you never talked over her either.”
“That’s right!  Do you know why I didn’t interrupt her?...Because when Mrs. Carol talks, everyone should listen…even you and even Momma!”

Once our meeting was done, the kids went to the playground for a few minutes.  I interacted with the parents who seemed just as nervous as I was while the kids interacted with each other in a “fun” environment.  Jacob kept looking around the playground for the Backhoe that he had played with when we came to Register in January. (It was put away at the moment.)  Afterwards, we went back into the classroom, he found his name on his colors, markers and paints, and carried them outside…not holding my hand.

In the car, he said that he thinks he is going to have fun at his new school.
